For my first major tour overseas after a long hiatus, I decided to see if I could get my home-built machine (the “Blue Shift”) right through the middle of Sweden. Most tourists either stick to the coasts, or go east-to-west from Stockholm to Gothenburg.
Because I like the road less travelled, I decided to go right up through the centre of the country from the southern tip, before returning to Oslo to catch the ferry back to Germany.
If you like pine trees, lakes, serenity, moose, dime bars and pine trees, this is the tour for you.
I started from Trelleborg, and made my way through Skåne to the great lakes of Vättern and Vänern. After a great deal of emptiness, broken only by the relative metropolis of Jönkoping, I reached the strange crator-lake of Siljan and the resort of Mora, home to the famous Vasaloppet ski race. From there it was a wild and remote trek across the mountains into Norway, and a final trip down the mighty Glomma to Oslo.
